After witnessing enough death and sorrow, the ageless Fushi retreats to a secluded isle, shielding himself from hostile Nokkers. Instead of striking him directly, the Nokkers attack nearby villages beyond his protection, hoping to draw him out. Soon a band called the Guardians—headed by Hisame, heir of fallen warrior Hayase—finds Fushi.
Remembering how Fushi once defended Janada Island from the Nokkers, the Guardians have attracted a sizable following and earned renown worldwide. Though hesitant at first, Fushi permits the Guardians to join him on the site of the latest Nokker assault. In their hamlet, Fushi encounters several valuable companions, both new and familiar. Yet as the clash with the Nokkers only deepens losses, Fushi must summon inner resolve to confront his unavoidable grief.
