Ten years ago, paranormal zones appeared in Japan and South America, later named the Gates of Hell and the Gates of Paradise. In these zones strange and inexplicable events occur: people die or go missing, unknown plants grow there, and bizarre visions manifest. Humanity encloses these zones with high walls. Simultaneously with the appearance of the Gates of Hell, the sky above the earth is replaced by a counterfeit: the Moon disappears, and each star now corresponds to the life of a specific person. When a person dies, they fall from the sky along with their star. These people are contractors. Each contractor receives certain supernatural abilities and a price for them—the requirement to perform some actions after using the powers, sometimes illogical and absurd. Contractors also lose attachment to other people, the ability to feel emotions, and are guided solely by logic and self-interest. They are the perfect mercenaries. Special services and various organizations from all countries around the world begin to search for and hire contractors. Those who learn about contractors have their memories erased immediately by the latest technology obtained as a result of studying the Gates of Hell. This story tells of an unremarkable young man, a regular person who goes by the name Li Shenshun, an exchange student. His colleagues at the "Organization" call him Hei, and to intelligence services and other contractors he is known as VK201, "Black Reaper".
