In a world that feels both familiar and altered, timid scholar and gamer Yuki Nagato leads North High School"s Literary Society as its president. Her companions, the excessively cautious Ryouko Asakura and the utterly ordinary Kyon, constitute the club"s only other members. Still, Yuki relishes the calm and solitude she shares with them, particularly when beside Kyon, whom she secretly admires. Joining the circle are Tsuruya and Mikuru Asahina—two friends with diametrically opposed traits who often drop by the society in the evenings.
On a December evening, as Yuki trudged home, she was compelled to etch bizarre sigils upon the pavement by a girl claiming to chase Santa Claus. The girl introduced herself as Haruhi Suzumiya, an pupil from the renowned Kouyouen Academy who pursues extraterrestrials, chrononauts, and psychics. When Haruhi and her companion Itsuki Koizumi burst into the clubroom, they announced themselves as formal members of the Literary Society, with Haruhi assuming the role of executive president. Their arrival instantly transformed the club"s routine, injecting excitement and unpredictability into every meeting.
After the era of the Literary Society ended, Yuki and her companions became entangled in a string of escapades led by Haruhi; each mishap drew Yuki and Kyon nearer than ever for the rest of time.
