Yuugi Mutou is a naive, isolated high‑schooler who loves games. While staying with his grandfather, the proprietor of a game shop, he discovers an ancient Egyptian relic called the "Millennium Puzzle." Rumored to grant any wish to those who solve it, Yuugi resolves to crack the puzzle and earn friends. After years of effort, he finally completes it and mysteriously finds his wish granted.
At the same time a new card game called "Duel Monsters" gains popularity. In this game, duelists battle each other with monsters using magic and trap cards to thwart opponents. Yuugi quickly masters the game, living a peaceful life with his new companions.
But Yuugi"s calm is brief. The undefeated duelist and self‑centered billionaire Seto Kaiba kidnaps his grandfather, forcing Yuugi to duel the rare "Blue‑Eyes White Dragon." He is thrust into a world of fierce battles, with stakes rising as dark forces loom. After unexpectedly defeating Kaiba with help from his "other self" – the spirit of an unnamed pharaoh trapped in the puzzle – he unofficially earns the title "King of Games."
