While the global alliance struggles to secure its liberty from the extraterrestrial menace called the Neuroi, girls endowed with sorcery—known as witches—persist in combat. The ongoing war has dampened spirits, so Grace Maitland Steward, a former witch still active in the forces, submits a strategy that champions music as a vital ally capable of turning the conflict. Her concept is dismissed, forcing Grace to devise a method to demonstrate its worth to higher command. She partners with Aila Paivikki Linnamaa and Eleonore Giovanna Gassion—witches who have already achieved acclaim as vocalists—to enlist additional witches and establish the League of Nations Air Force's Musical Squadron. The initiative yields seven promising recruits. Among them, 14‑year‑old Virginia Robertson, who lacks any combat background, appears to hold a power too great to overlook.
