Thirteen‑year‑old Mirai Onodzawa is experiencing a typical adolescent crisis. The agonizing search for her "self," her place in the world, and the obvious or imagined misunderstandings with parents and others all drive the girl to feel anxious and bitter, confiding her secret thoughts not in a diary but on her own mobile phone. Even a trip into the hottest summer heat with her younger brother Yuki to a robot exhibition does little to lift her spirits. But a walk around the artificial island of Odaiba turns into a nightmare—an unprecedented earthquake strikes the Kantō region. The Tokyo Tower collapses, Rainbow Bridge crumbles, and the fury of nature separates brother from sister. Now, in a realm of death and chaos, they must find each other and, together with the young woman Mari Kusakabe, escape the nightmare and reach their home. Their heroic odyssey should once again show us whether a blind force of nature or the human spirit is stronger.
