Emerging from a cocoon in the village of Old Home, a young Haibane—a creature bearing a halo and tiny gray wings—wakes to a world she cannot comprehend, bereft of memories from before. She is named Rakka after the falling dream she experienced while still sealed inside, and she quickly adapts to living in this unfamiliar town. amid the quiet, misty streets that echo with whispers of forgotten pasts. Yet the Haibane are bound by strict laws: they may not leave the village or approach the enclosing walls. Coupled with unexplained vanishings of their kind on the "Day of Flight," these rules stir unease in Rakka and her companions, who possess almost no knowledge about themselves. Though they live without recollection of their past, Rakka and the others strive to escape former suffering and ultimately discover redemption.
