Even in ultra‑modern Japan there remain silent corners where balance is governed by ancient legends, and people know and remember a great deal, yet they will never open up to the first stranger. This is the mountain town of Jōga, where the family of the main character, high‑school senior Hiroshi Kuzuumi, moves. Hiro‑kun, whom many call "Professor" – a calm, responsible and sensible young man, because he has to take care of his paralyzed younger sister, as they have no mother and their father is a creative person. After settling into the new school, observant Hiro quickly realized that people of the mountain hinterland are not just different from city dwellers. They differ greatly! How else to explain that life in the town freezes before sunset? Or why few are willing to go to the "old town," separated by a river, of their own accord? Or why Nemuru Kusinada, the class head and heir of the "native" clan, is feared by classmates to the point of trembling in their knees? Gradually Hiroshi begins to understand that the roots of all these questions lie in ancient rituals of worshipping the wolf gods of the local land.
