Gray Mouse Yoriiko Kusumoto could not have imagined that she would become a friend of the most beautiful and intelligent Kanako Yuzuki. The friendship between the senior high‑school girls was a true spiritual kinship, and Yoriiko even preferred to quarrel with her mother in order to preserve this relationship. They shared a secret with Kanako and had special plans for the summer holidays. However, an unexpected tragedy separated the girls. Soon mysterious events began to occur, and the story involved not only Kanako"s relatives and guardians but also Tokyo police, journalists, military scientists, and exorcists. The setting of this tangled mystical detective is the 1950s, which leaves its mark on what happens. Memories of war torment Sergeant Kibu, who is busy with the investigation, and some "threads" lead to the past. In the present a maniac who dismembers bodies is active, and he is somehow connected to the strange hospital where Kanako was treated. The plot of Box for Demons demands viewers" attention and patience: there are many characters whose motives are not always clear, which is complicated by a nonlinear chronology. But high‑quality animation, character design from CLAMP, and a decent script make this series quite worth watching.
