Tatsumi, an ordinary village boy craving fame and recognition, sets out with his friends to the capital in hopes of earning acclaim, making money, and helping his hometown. Yet reality proves far from rosy: the capital is steeped in corruption and poverty, ruled by a cruel prime minister who governs behind the back of the young, naive heir to the Empire. This prime minister is also the target of a revolutionary army that calls itself "Night Raid."
All this comes to light when Tatsumi meets members of the Night Raid gang, who attack an aristocratic family he had met earlier that day and invite him to stay overnight. In truth, they are brutal sadists; in their torture basement, Tatsumi"s friends die. Learning of this and avenging his friends" deaths, Tatsumi realizes he must grow stronger and decides to join the Night Raid group. Their mission is to serve as the "scourging sword" against cruel aristocrats, fight for freedom and justice, and acquire Teigu.
Teigu are ancient artifacts created over a thousand years ago in the old Empire. They grant powerful abilities—whether weapons, armor, or unique powers. Each squad member possesses one Teigu, and to wield it the owner must be compatible with it. However, Teigu are not possessed only by Night Raid members; their main adversaries—the elite army squad of the Empire known as "Yegori," led by the invincible Esdes—also hold them.
