Anne Shirley was born in the small, salt‑battered town of Prince Edward Island. Her mother died before she could remember her name, and the boy who would later be called Anne was left to grow up under the care of his aunt and uncle. The family"s modest home could not provide the nurturing environment she needed, so she was sent to a boarding school in Montreal where she learned discipline but also felt the sting of loneliness. When her aunt"s health failed, a kind family in Avonlea stepped forward to adopt the spirited girl. Though she had endured loss and hardship, Anne"s imagination and hope carried her into a new life with the Cuthberts.
