Japan, mid‑nineteenth century. The end of centuries of isolation, a period of storms and upheavals, the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. The collision between Western experience and Eastern wisdom stirred minds and gave rise to new ideas – sometimes quite dangerous. This was fully experienced by Kodo Yumikura, a renowned healer who had studied under Dutch specialists. After another invitation to the capital, Dr. Yumikura mysteriously vanished. His daughter Tidzuru, unable to bear the uncertainty, disguised herself as a young samurai, took her family sword kodati, and set out for Kyoto in search of her father. On the very first night of city life, Tidzuru witnessed a brutal clash between two samurai groups. The victors captured her, and what a surprise it was when she learned that she had fallen into the hands of the Shinsengumi – false guardians of order in Kyoto, feared by both enemies and friends. Even more astonished was Tidzuru when she discovered that her father was not a stranger to these new acquaintances, and they urgently needed him because Kodo‑sensei is involved in the mystery surrounding the origin of this strange squad.
