After Hakuouki ends, Chizuru Yukimura and the Shinsengumi must escape Kyoto and voyage to Edo. With commander Isami Kondou absent, vice‑commander Toshizou Hijikata assumes the role of acting leader. Yet Hijikata wrestles not only with added command responsibilities—which unnerves those around him— but also with a sudden, uncontrollable bloodlust. Worse still, the compulsion does not isolate him; it begins to drive some of his men toward madness.
Eventually Kondou returns bearing imperial orders to hold the castle, and their unit receives a new title: Kouyou Chinbutai. Yet in war, power can shift abruptly and loyalties may falter. In Hakuouki Hekketsuroku, Chizuru follows the Shinsengumi into the war"s core and keeps searching for her lost father, while her relationship with Hijikata deepens.
