After the passing of Inu no Taishou, his blades Tenseiga and Tessaiga were bequeathed to his sons Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha respectively. Yet another sword remains in the family"s history that once guarded the realm's balance. While visiting his companion Kagome Higurashi in contemporary times, Inuyasha comes across Sounga—his father"s third blade in dim courtyard. Unearthed by one of Kagome"s forebears within the ancient well that links past and future, Sounga has been preserved for years as a prized relic at the Higurashi shrine. Soon it discloses an ominous spirit that craves sudden death, its malevolent presence threatening all who approach.
In the effort to tame its destructive nature, Inuyasha succeeds in transporting Sounga back to the Edo period where he must face his brother Sesshoumaru, who has coveted it. When the two lose the sword amid their clash, the brothers launch a fierce search, still ignorant of its hidden truth and the inheritance Inu no Taishou left them.
