Future samurai Shinsuke Hyoudou's existence is shattered when he watches hermit Jinka Yamato and fox maiden Tama Youko annihilate a bandits' hideout in an instant. Tama is actually a katawara, a race endowed with magic, who can bestow her abilities onto Jinka through an exclusive rite. Together they roam the lands as guardians, confronting malevolent forces whether katawara or human.
As Shinsuke delves deeper into this altered realm, he learns that monks conduct cruel experiments on spiritually endowed civilians, aiming to forge human‑katawara hybrids capable of battling monsters. Soon after rescuing Shakuyaku—a girl they save from the monks" trials and gathering further comrades, the band sets out to fulfill their individual aspirations while confronting ancient evils that threaten their homeland and seek redemption.
