Humanity has always been drawn to the study of the unknown. Even if the unknown harbored boundless danger… Many hundreds of years ago, in the middle of a southern sea, an island was discovered whose base bore a massive opening. The question of what lies there, deep below, instantly poisoned the minds of those who wished to seize the supposed riches. Countless adventurers gradually arrived at this speck of land, descended downwards, and soon discovered that there was indeed something to live on. However, at the same time, people who went deeper and deeper and returned told of extraordinary, bloodthirsty creatures that had killed their companions, and also put forward theories that the hole actually has no bottom. And somewhere deep below a name was born – Abyss.
Over time, around the opening a city called Os formed, built by descendants of the first explorers of the Abyss on the bones of their brave ancestors. Twelve‑year‑old Riko, like many children in the city, is an orphan whose parents perished in the depths of a ravenous hole. Children with such fates are forced to live in shelters at the guilds of Abyss explorers and work for them, extracting Relics. However, keeping memories of her legendary mother, Riko does not despair and, on the contrary, wants to gain experience as soon as possible and obtain a white whistle, symbolizing the highest rank among explorers.
But until she is only a student, forced to settle for a red whistle of a novice and safe excursions no deeper than one hundred meters from the surface. How can she become great here? One day, giving herself entirely to work, Riko almost fell into the maw of a fierce monster, from which she was saved by a strange boy – neither robot nor human – who, as the girl thinks, arrived from the very bottom of the Abyss. This event gives rise to a new hypothesis: could it be that every day, looking into the Abyss, the Abyss in turn gazes intently at you?
