Escaping a harrowing youth, solitary mercenary Guts wanders from conflict to conflict, vanquishing formidable foes with his massive blade. After a single clash, he encounters the enigmatic Griffith and his modest force called the Band of the Hawk. Victorious, Griffith enlists Guts, offering the swordsman a camaraderie he had never experienced before.
Together with the adept fighter Casca, Guts aids Griffith in leading the band toward renown and triumph. Yet as his military standing rises, Griffith attracts assassination plots and political intrigue. He employs Guts to advance his own lofty ambitions, exploiting the swordsman"s lack of personal goals.
Though he grows nearer to Casca, Guts" aimlessness deprives him of belonging. With conflicting motives, Guts and Casca vie for Griffith"s vision—while fractures among the trio threaten to unravel their realm.
