In the realm of Midland, a hired blade known as Guts roams the countryside, choosing strife over tranquility. Though circumstances rarely favor him, he remains an indomitable force that conquers every foe while brandishing a colossal blade surpassing his own size.
On one occasion, Griffith, the enigmatic commander of the mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk, observes Guts's combat skill and extends an invitation for him to join the troupe. Declining the proposal, Guts confronts Griffith in single combat—and, much to the latter's astonishment, is defeated and compelled to enlist.
Now Guts must stand beside Griffith and his allies in aiding Midland against the Chuder Empire. Yet Griffith appears to pursue ambitions beyond merely ending the conflict in the midst of relentless battles and hardships.
