Kohachi Inugami, an occult‑specialized detective, arrives in a secluded Japanese hamlet after the innkeeper implores him to investigate a series of inexplicable livestock deaths, each carcass found rotting and mutilated. The owner, weary of nightly tragedies, hopes Inugami will uncover the truth. While inspecting the scene, Inugami spots a strange young farmhand working in the fields; he is shunned by his peers and nicknamed "Dorotabou" for his foul odor, yet he is startled that anyone would notice him.
Driven by intrigue, Inugami recruits Dorotabou to aid his inquiry despite the villagers" disdainful glances. The detective gathers testimonies, examines the mutilated remains for clues, and consults local elders who whisper legends of shadowy creatures that prey on animals. Unaware that this case will expose a hidden realm where beast‑like beings called Kemono coexist with humans, Dorotabou will find newfound purpose in a life that had felt hollow.
