Although a year has passed since the Iwatobi High School Swim Club was founded, it still lacks new recruits. With Haruka Nanase and Makoto Tachibana now in their senior year, together with friends Nagisa Hazuki and Rei Ryuugazaki, they must devise a strategy to draw fresh members; otherwise the club will have to shut down next year because of insufficient enrollment.
At the same time, as graduation looms, the seniors must chart their future paths. While Rin Matsuoka, now captain of Samezuka Academy"s swim team and eager to become a professional swimmer, has a clear goal, Haruka and Makoto remain uncertain about their career directions.
Tension further escalates when Sousuke Yamazaki, an old acquaintance of Rin"s, arrives in town to study at Samezuka Academy. His presence as a newly scouted swimmer strains the dynamics between him, Rin, and Haruka.
