After his mother died when he was very young, elementary student Capeta Taira had to grow up quickly so his father would not worry. His dad works for a paving firm and often has to stay late to keep the family afloat. No matter how stoic he appears before his father, Capeta remains a solitary child living a hard life. Besides ordinary chores at home, he also faces the tormentor Nobu Andou, which makes him feel even more isolated, even though his classmate Monami Suzuki offers support.
One afternoon, Capeta"s father watches a group of young go‑kart racers zooming around and is struck by the spectacle. The sight of the go‑kart racers sparks a memory of his own childhood dreams. He decides to gather discarded parts from the track and starts building a surprise for his son. While Capeta and Monami sneak into the yard, suspecting something is brewing, they discover a go‑kart assembled from scrap—Capeta"s name stamped on it! Though missing an engine and looking battered, the kart is largely finished and operational. The kart's wheels squeal.
Even in a downpour, Capeta cannot resist testing this new machine. Driving the kart downhill on slick asphalt, what could have been a near‑fatal mishap turns into an exhilarating obsession. Each lap becomes a testament to his newfound determination, turning fear into fuel. No longer bored with existence, Capeta"s heart is fired up by a fresh passion as he steps into the racing world and his future dreams.
