A regular Japanese schoolboy, Hikaru, decides to visit his grandfather"s attic after classes in order to find something interesting and useful. He never imagined that when he rummaged for antiques, the discovery—a vintage Go board—would prove fatal and completely change his life. By a strange twist of fate, Hikaru stumbles upon not an ordinary board—there are plenty in Tokyo—but a piece that houses a spirit named Sai, who has been yearning to escape for many decades. Back in the feudal era, Sai, being the greatest Go master of his time, was inexplicably trapped inside a board; now that the world has changed beyond recognition and his savior turns out to be an ordinary Japanese boy, he finally gains the long‑sought freedom. Thus Hikaru inadvertently acquires a strange and extremely clingy incorporeal friend, visible only to him, while Master Sai—who has dreamed for decades of playing his beloved game—gets this opportunity.
