Fourteen years after the Third Impact, Earth has become a barren wasteland; civilization lies in ruins, and those Shinji Ikari once knew have changed beyond recognition. Captured inside Evangelion Unit‑01, he is rescued from orbit by Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami, only to discover he is now a captive of WILLE, a military group commanded by his former protector Misato Katsuragi. With icy suspicion, his old comrades regard him warily and refuse aid as he confronts the fallout of his deeds for himself ever today.
A wounded and bewildered Shinji is extracted from WILLE by Rei Ayanami and brought back to NERV headquarters. There he encounters the mysterious Kaworu Nagisa, who quickly becomes a source of comfort and insight into NERV"s ongoing conflict with the Angels. Yet their brief reprieve is shattered by an impending clash, where Shinji discovers that his adversaries are no longer Angels but former allies. In this harsh showdown that will shape the planet"s destiny, Shinji learns firsthand that history cannot be rewritten. He must now decide if redemption is possible or forever lost.
