Fifteen years after the apocalyptic Second Impact, humanity confronts a fresh menace: gigantic celestial entities known as Angels descend upon Tokyo‑3 sequentially. Despite deploying their most sophisticated armaments and strategic doctrines, humans cannot repel the Angels. Salvation hinges on NERV, a shadowy agency commanded by the detached Gendou Ikari. Under his direction, NERV fields colossal humanoid mecha dubbed Evangelions to battle the Angels, armed with cutting‑edge weaponry and shielded by Absolute Terror Fields.
Years after being cast aside by his father, Shinji Ikari—Gendou"s fourteen‑year‑old son—returns to Tokyo‑3. He wrestles with deep‑rooted pain from his mother"s death and the emotional abandonment inflicted by Gendou. Fearful of opening up again, his life shifts when he encounters 29‑year‑old Misato Katsuragi, a senior NERV officer who offers him an unrestrained maternal affection he has never known.
The Angels, each bearing unique powers and terrifying designs, have already obliterated several neighboring cities. Meanwhile, the NERV headquarters operates from a hidden underground complex, coordinating pilots and deploying strategic countermeasures. Shinji's return is met with skepticism by many, but Misato quickly becomes his confidante and guide through the labyrinth of NERV's protocols.
A catastrophic Angel assault compels Shinji to act as Gendou discloses the real reason for summoning him back: only Shinji can effectively pilot Evangelion Unit‑01, a new mecha that syncs with his biometrics.
