After Koyomi Araragi and Hitagi Senjougahara graduate, only a handful of familiar faces remain at Naoetsu Private High School. Among them is Suruga Kanbaru, the owner of the Monkey's Paw. When she hears whispers about a mysterious figure called the "Devil" who can magically solve any problem, Kanbaru assumes the gossip concerns her and sets out to investigate.
She learns that the Devil is actually Rouka Numachi, a former junior‑high basketball rival who can no longer play because of a leg injury. Rouka offers free counsel to anyone who seeks her out, acting as a collector of misfortune and delighting in easing her clients" worries by giving them false hope that their troubles will vanish. Although Kanbaru sees no real damage, she scolds Rouka for lying and returns home, relieved that the rumors are not about her. Yet she may still have cause for concern: she discovers that her left hand has returned to its human form.
