The action takes place during the Edo period in the Fukagawa area of old Edo (now Tokyo). Because the area often suffers from fires and floods, its inhabitants prefer not to buy household items (pots, futons, clothing), but to rent them so that it is not a shame to discard them if they suddenly have to evacuate urgently. Seiji and Oko — brother (younger) and sister (older) — own a rental shop called "Izumoya." However, among the items in their possession (and sometimes ending up in clients" hands) are so‑called tsukumogami — items created more than a hundred years ago that have acquired their own souls. Both Oko and Seiji can see the spirits of tsukumogami and communicate with them, which is why they often deliberately try to get into their shop.
