University students Kuriaki Magi and Yaeko Kirihara observe a man receive a lethal strike to the skull, yet they scarcely believe when he escapes the scene unharmed in the dim alleyways. When they pursue the victim, Momoyuki Mogura, they discover he is ageless everlasting.
Initially Magi and Yaeko think Mogura is deluded, but their view shifts once they start encountering phantoms. Mogura reveals these are departed souls that generate demon flame, a glow guiding spirits beyond death. Deprived of the authority to wield this flame, Mogura has spent years gathering its remnants from spirits, yearning to reach the beyond. With Magi and Yaeko aiding in locating additional souls, the enigmatic Mogura could finally realize his strange aspiration for a final chance in the shadows of the city.
