This sparks a conflict among human factions vying for planetary dominance, and the struggle escalates into war. Ultimately, an autocratic regime called the Gaia Sanction halts Earth"s repopulation and imposes strict control.
Captain Herlock, a distinguished member of the Elite Wing, was tasked by the Gaia Sanction to protect Earth. Under his command, his fleet proved unstoppable and feared across the stars. However, the regime permitted a diplomatic elite to settle on Earth, infuriating Herlock. In defiance, he turned rogue, launching attacks against diplomats and even his own ships. He then unleashed dark matter upon the planet to render it uninhabitable, but in doing so he was consumed by it, gaining an immortal status.
