Rika Furude and her companions reside in the mountain hamlet of Hinamizawa; during June 1983, they introduce transfer student Keiichi Maebara into their circle, rendering him the sole male among them. Following lessons, they enjoy games and spend each day reveling in life to its fullest. Though this routine appears ordinary, Keiichi starts detecting peculiar conduct from his peers, who seem to conceal the village's ominous truths of darkness that threaten their safety from him in the shadows of the village.
Elsewhere, an observer witnesses these increasingly disturbing occurrences and recalls countless times similar narratives have unfolded. Armed with that recollection, the observer resolves to mend these fractured realms. Yet when certain variables shift, the individual confronts a chilling truth: they possess no certainty about what will happen or how to avert the looming catastrophe for their future.
