Spirits have long been drawn to Keitarou Gentouga because of his potent aura. A harrowing encounter with one left his right hand cursed, obliging him to wear a glove constantly. Now a first‑year university student, Keitarou strives for an ordinary existence. Prompted by his childhood companion Eiko Houzuki, he takes on a role as a private instructor. As the top graduate of his cohort, his inaugural pupil is the tutoring firm"s brightest prospect, Yayoi Houzuki.
Keitarou learns that Yayoi is Eiko"s cousin and that she has a pair of pupils in each eye—granting her sight into the spirit realm and enabling her to hunt vengeful entities deliberately. After a car crash claimed both parents, she has been hunting the formidable spirit that stole her mother"s soul. Recognizing Keitarou"s magnetic pull for spirits, she enlists him to gather other malevolent beings that will aid her in the forthcoming battle. Though perilous, Keitarou agrees to accompany her, yet each new spirit they confront tests his determination anew.
