Thirty years earlier, the Eurasian landmass was ravaged by a colossal "spatial quake"—an unexplained phenomenon of space vibrations that claimed more than 150 million lives. Since that catastrophe, such quakes have sporadically plagued the globe, though on a milder scale.
Shidou Itsuka appears to be an ordinary high‑schooler who shares a home with his younger sister, Kotori. When a looming spatial quake endangers Tengu City, he dashes to protect her, only to be engulfed by the ensuing blast. At its epicenter he encounters a mysterious girl who turns out to be a "Spirit," an otherworldly being whose presence triggers these quakes. Soon he is drawn into a clash between this girl and the Anti‑Spirit Taskforce, a ruthless unit dedicated to eradicating Spirits.
Yet another faction, "Ratatoskr," champions the rescue of Spirits; astonishingly, it is led by Shidou"s sister. After the confrontation, Kotori forces him to join her cause, offering an alternative plan: win the Spirits" affection. Now the world"s survival hinges on his romantic skill as he pursues Spirits to win their hearts.
