God has forsaken the world. Consequently, living beings cannot die nor can new ones arise, and the "dead" wander aimlessly among the living. Granting one final grace before withdrawing forever, God fashioned "gravekeepers," enchanted entities capable of laying the dead to rest with proper interment and the restless souls that linger in the shadows of forgotten graves, haunting silence. Ai, a bright yet innocent young girl, assumes her village's gravekeeping role after her late mother. One day, a man called Hampnie Hambart, who claims to be Ai's father, arrives and slaughters every resident of her hamlet. With her home destroyed and no future plans, Ai chooses to follow the enigmatic man on his quest. As they traverse the realm, the youthful gravekeeper endeavors to honor her duties, bestowing peace upon the deceased and aiding the living, while simultaneously discovering more about the world God abandoned in this sorrowful condition.
