Dragon Quest draws loosely from Dragon Quest III. Although many names and characters feel familiar, the world map is smaller, more compact, and noticeably different in shape. The protagonists, Abel and Tialah, embark on a perilous journey. Tialah obtains the legendary Red Stone from Master Yogi, sage of Aliahan Village. Soon thereafter, Baramos, the malevolent ruler, kidnaps Tialah to employ the Red Stone in reviving The Great Dragon and claiming immortality for himself. Abel vows to rescue her, receiving the Blue Stone that can seal the Dragon after its release, and he sets out to confront Baramos.
