Ayakashi are bizarre, otherworldly beings unseen by most people. While many pose no threat, a few attack humans to siphon their life energy. Exorcist ninjas are charged with shielding civilians from these malevolent spirits.
Matsuri Kazamaki, a youthful exorcist ninja hailing from an esteemed lineage, grew up with his best friend Suzu Kanade, a medium who radiates intense life force that lures ayakashi. Matsuri regards all such entities as perilous and strives to keep Suzu away, yet she longs for proximity to them. One day they confront Shirogane, the "Ayakashi King," intent on devouring Suzu. Just as she is about to be consumed, Matsuri intervenes and seals the spirit"s powers—though Shirogane retaliates by transforming him into a girl.
Until he discovers how to revert, Matsuri must navigate this odd existence while battling hostile ayakashi. Simultaneously, Suzu wrestles with her emotions toward Matsuri, deepening the uncertainty of their bond.
