Joe Yabuki is a troubled teenager whose only way to face problems is by swinging fists. Though he lacks courtesy and self‑control, his self‑taught fighting skill makes up for it.
While wandering the slums of Doya one day, Joe gets into a fight with a local gang. Even though he is outnumbered, he defeats them effortlessly and draws the attention of Danpei Tange—a former boxing coach now an alcoholic. Seeing Joe"s raw talent, Danpei offers to train him into Japan"s greatest boxer. At first Joe dismisses the veteran as a hopeless drunk, but after Danpei saves his life he agrees to live with him and learn the art of boxing. Unfortunately, Joe"s unruly personality makes him a troublesome student, often slipping back into his old ways.
To survive the harsh world of his new career, Joe must trust his mentor and master the techniques taught to him. Yet the road to becoming a professional boxer is full of struggles that will test his mettle until the end.
