Megalo Boxing is an advanced discipline where fighters don metal exoskeletons known as Gear. In the inaugural Megalonia contest, the unarmed contender Joe earned the title and became a legend. Yet shortly after, he was defeated in an exhibition bout by the second champion and disappeared from public view.
Seven years on, Joe now calls himself Nomad and lives quietly, taking part in occasional underground fights to survive. He suffers from vivid hallucinations and depends on pain medication to dull his thoughts. The constant ache reminds him of past fights, and he often questions whether the ring will ever be his sanctuary. He still hopes for redemption.
In one bout, Joe defeats a rival named Chief, who intentionally loses for extra gambling money. Later, Joe learns that Chief belongs to an immigrant group called the Casa. Chief is slowly amassing funds to buy the plot where they illegally reside. Initially reluctant, Joe ultimately chooses to support the Casa.
