At the chaotic close of the Tokugawa period, countless young souls were left orphaned by relentless war. Among those orphans, a nameless son of a fallen samurai eventually encounters Ryouma Sakamoto, an insurgent opposing the Bakufu regime. Impressed by his formidable swordsmanship, Ryouma bestows the name 'Ryo' upon him and invites him to travel alongside him.
