Guts, a wandering mercenary destined to be called the Black Swordsman, is known for wielding an greatsword. He takes contracts that pay the highest wages, yet he rarely stays with a faction—until he meets the Band of the Falcon. After finishing a job, Guts is ambushed and slays many of its members in battle. Griffith, the founder and leader of the Band of the Falcon, takes notice of Guts and challenges him to a duel. While the rest cannot match Guts, Griffith defeats him with a single strike.
Suffering injuries and brought to the Band of the Falcon"s encampment for healing, Guts awakens two days later. He confronts Griffith again, and the pair duel once more, this time with a stipulation: if Guts loses, he will join the Band. Because of his wounds, Guts is defeated and accepted by Griffith.
Three years later, Guts has risen to a commander within the Band. On the field his fighting skill rivals only Griffith"s as he faces numbers of foes alone. With Guts" raw power and Griffith"s command, the Band conquers every engagement they enter. Yet a looming threat shadows their path, poised to alter Guts" destiny forever. The looming darkness promises to test the bonds of friendship and the limits of courage that Guts has yet to fully understand.
