During Japan's Heian period, about a millennium ago, a privileged noble youth called Ojarumaru grew weary of his aristocratic existence. At the same time, three oni pilfered Enma"s power‑rod—king of the underworld—and then misplaced it. Ojarumaru discovers the rod, employs it to leap forward to modern times. There he meets a boy named Kazuma who takes him into his household. Over time, Ojarumaru befriends many others while evading the slapstick pursuits of the three oni—Akane, Kisuke, and Aobee—as they chase after the rod.
