Even before the beginning of this story, a massive earthquake devastated most of Japan and almost destroyed Tokyo, submerging three‑quarters of the city under water. The story takes us ten years forward to Igarashi Ganta, an apparently ordinary modest boy attending middle school in Nagano Prefecture. Having survived that terrible earthquake, he remembers nothing of the tragedy and lives a normal, peaceful life. But everything changes on the day when some blood‑stained person bursts into Ganta"s classroom through a window. With a mad grin, the Red Man rips the entire class apart, but instead of killing Ganta he implants a red shard of crystal into his chest. A few days after the massacre, Ganta becomes the sole suspect. And following a suspiciously swift trial, he is sentenced to life imprisonment in "Deadman Wonderland," a private prison resembling an amusement park.
