On a particular day, Remu Mikage is engaged in a video conversation with his sister Shiki, who has journeyed to the advanced Okinotori‑island Mega Float City to pursue higher studies and to explore cutting‑edge research. She reveals that both her sound and visual presence are entirely synthetic in both speech and appearance. To enhance academic performance, Shiki has employed neural‑linked nanomachines to transfer her mind into a computer and keeps her corporeal body in a 'body pool.' Though startled, Remu supports his sister's choice until the calamity dubbed the Early Rapture occurs.
The Early Rapture forces all who have digitized their consciousnesses to either slip into a coma or die. Remu makes one final visit to his sister's vacant flat, only to be astonished when Shiki appears at the threshold. Lacking recollection of family or history, and chased by a ruthless cadre of scientists, Shiki and her brother must escape using her newly acquired nanomachine control.
