Although chiefly employed as a potter in ancient Greece, Demetrios is criticized for his lack of determination and inability to remain calm during emergencies. One day, a lightning strike catapults him into Tokyo in 1964, the inaugural year Japan hosted the Summer Games.
While a family readily accepts him as an innocuous foreigner, Demetrios eventually brings the insights he gains from the modern world back to his era each time he is hurled by lightning. As he repeatedly shifts between the two periods, Demetrios learns to impress his village mates and starts asserting himself—just in time to grow stronger, organize, and compete in his own Olympic event at home.
His return also sparks a renaissance of traditional craftsmanship, blending old and new styles that captivate both villagers and visitors alike.
