In 2035, a calamity dubbed "The Burst" erupts at a Japanese research station, spawning an aggressively growing, voracious, self‑duplicating entity called "Matter." It slithers through the wreckage of dams and defense installations in Kurobe Gorge, while special forces attempt to stop it from reaching the sea and hired guns hunt for answers about its origin.
After being salvaged from the Matter, Aiko Tachibana is kept under relentless medical monitoring. She passes her convalescence crafting origami planes.
Her routine at school is soon disrupted when transfer student Yuuya Kanzaki arrives and highlights several anomalies in her physiology. Why does she escape harm, and why has she shed the need for a wheelchair? He insists there is more to her than she was told, and that only she can halt The Burst.
As numerous groups take an interest in Aiko, she and Yuuya must rally support and set out on a perilous trek into the gorge"s core before enemies seal their fate. To evade the plot against them, they confront the Matter—a foe that moves like liquid.
