In a far‑off era, humanity teeters on the brink of annihilation after colossal predators called Klaxosaurs ravage the planet, compelling the remnants to shelter within towering citadels known as Plantations. Within these bastions, youngsters are groomed to commandeer gigantic mechs dubbed FranXX— the sole armaments capable of vanquishing the Klaxosaurs—paired as male and female partners. Raised solely for this mission, these youths remain ignorant of the world beyond their walls, surviving only by safeguarding their lineage.
Hiro, a hopeful FranXX contender, has lost his drive and confidence following a failed aptitude assessment. Skipping the graduation ceremony of his cohort, he retreats to a secluded forest lake where he meets an enigmatic girl bearing twin horns atop her head. She reveals herself as Zero Two, a codename linked to the notorious FranXX ace known as the "Partner Killer." Before Hiro can process this revelation, a sudden Klaxosaur assault erupts in the Plantation. Zero Two confronts the beast in her FranXX, sustaining severe damage and crashing close to Hiro. Discovering her partner"s demise, Zero Two beckons Hiro aboard, urging him to share the cockpit. Together they repel the Klaxosaur with relative ease. With a new ally beside him, Hiro finds a path to redemption for his earlier shortcomings—yet the true cost of their sacrifice remains shrouded in mystery.
