The civil war, called the Meiji Restoration, has ended. In Japan reforms based on a Western model are underway in full swing. The shogunate no longer exists; a parliament and government have been established; samurai are donning European suits; peasants receive surnames; trade and entrepreneurship flourish. Yet why does the hero of the secret war of Bakumatsu wander the country unrecognized in the guise of a good‑natured simpleton, helping everyone in distress and asking for nothing in return? Thus Himura Kenshin, a great sword master and former assassin by force, tries to atone for past sins and find peace in his wounded soul. A brief respite finds Kenshin in Tokyo, former Edo, where he saves Kaoru Kamiya, a young owner of a family dojo. Gradually a warm company of wanderers and misfits gathers at Kamiya's dojo – Kaoru, Kenshin, the mercenary Sannosuke, and orphan Yahiko. Yet a peaceful life filled with merry adventures and playful quarrels did not last long.
