During Japan"s Sengoku era, a youthful orphan named Kotarou and his faithful dog Tobimaru resort to pilfering from unsuspecting villagers just to survive. Yet Kotarou is compelled to stay on the move when he discovers that assassins dispatched by China"s Ming Dynasty are tracking him for enigmatic motives unrelated to his minor thefts.
Luckily, the pair encounter Nanashi, a wandering ronin who has taken shelter in a modest temple, at the moment Kotarou is assaulted and Tobimaru is poisoned. Though the samurai rescues them from their attackers, he believes they need no further aid; but when offered a precious gem in return for guarding them, he grudgingly agrees to serve as their bodyguard—only until Tobimaru recovers and they reach their goal. As the trio embarks on a treacherous trek, it quickly becomes clear that danger looms at every turn, as the Ming forces have now sent a fearsome swordsman to seize Kotarou and fulfill an ominous prophecy. Their resolve is tested as each step brings new perils and unseen threats.
