Lucius Modestus, a Roman architect from antiquity who once designed grand temples, finds himself in the job market because he struggles to generate fresh concepts. As his mood and character grow bleak, companions invite him to a bathhouse to unwind. Unable to relax amid the noisy, crowded facility, Lucius lowers his head into the water. Beneath, he discovers a hidden passage that carries him to a contemporary Japanese spa, granting the spark needed for a new design.
Armed with insights far beyond his era, Lucius strives to replicate the discoveries, often falling short because of limited resources. Yet the sheer inventiveness may suffice to capture public interest and restore his standing within the city"s elite circles as an architect. His reputation slowly resurges among patrons in the bustling city of Rome.
