While spending the summer at his aunt's residence, the young yet ill Shou uncovers a remarkable revelation: after trailing the house feline into foliage, he catches a sight of a pint-sized girl roughly the size of his finger! Naming her species "Borrowers," as they subsist on minuscule fragments of human belongings, the girl presents herself as Arrietty. As he learns she resides in the house cellar with her parents, Pod and Homily, Shou becomes wildly thrilled at the notion of such extraordinary neighbors.
