After the American occupation, Japan was going through difficult times. In 1955 the country was in chaos and poverty; an economic revival was vital, so the government decided on harsh measures to fight crime and street violence. Strict‑regime colonies were created for young offenders, intended to prevent them from wanting a bandit life. The story begins in the special colony named Shyona, located near Tokyo. Sixteen‑ and seventeen‑year‑old teenagers with nicknames Joe, Mario, Soldier, Goliath, Cabbage and Turtle are sent there for various crimes. After enduring the guards" mockery and the prison doctor, the boys reached a cell and decided to establish a hierarchy "by concepts." But they were impeded by the seventh resident—a student named Sakuragi. The strong and smart young man quickly explained to the juniors that they should not play the childish games imposed by others. On both sides of the fence, one must live not like thieves but humanly: do not betray, do not fear, keep friends, endure hardships and deprivation. The boys understood the "older brother" lesson and did not forget it even after parting ways and gaining freedom. The lives of friends in prison and on the outside form the plot of the series.
