In an alternate world resembling mid‑1930s Europe, two superpowers – the Eastern European Imperial Union and the Atlantic Federation – clash for dominance. To replenish resources, the Empire invades the small kingdom of Galley, where a unique fuel – ragnit, "the stone of lords" – is abundant. The ruling house of Galley is weak and has long lost real power, but the people have decided to stand until the end. The town of Brühl is evacuated in panic before the approaching front, and here the militia officer Alicia Melkiott reports that a spy has been spotted near the river… The anime tells of the struggle of small but proud Galley against the invaders, of the daily combat life of the 7th Combined Battalion where the main characters serve, and of how trials reveal the true nature of people and help them understand each other despite national, racial, and ideological differences.
